Open MS Stream Using Teams on Your Mobile Device to Generate Captions for Videos

Last updated on October 3, 2022

UPDATE: As of May 24th, 2021, Teams recordings will no longer be saved to Stream. This tutorial will remain accessible for those who are working with older recordings saved in Stream, but for those working with recordings made after this date, please see the Upload a MS Teams Recording to Yuja and Generate Auto-Captions tutorial instead.

Adding closed captions to your videos makes them accessible to all students and is fairly easy to do. The following tutorial walks you through the process of using your mobile device to generate captions for MS Teams videos using MS Stream.

Directions

  1. Open the Microsoft Teams App.
  2. Navigate to the Teams button on the navigation bar on the bottom of your screen.
  3. Select the Team in which the recorded meeting took place.
  4. Select the Meeting Post. The team chat will appear along with the recorded meeting.
  5. Select the More Options Menu (three dots) at the top-right corner of the recording.
  6. Select Open in Microsoft Stream.
  7. Sign in using your MSU Denver Credentials, if prompted.
  8. Select the More Options Menu (three dots) located at the bottom of the recording (to the right of the heart above the comments option).
  9. Select Update Video Details (Pencil Icon).
  10. Select Video Language.
  11. Select English.
    • This should automatically check the Autogenerate a Caption File box under Options. If the box is not checked, you will have to do it manually.
  12. Click Apply at the top of the screen to save the changes.
    • It may take a few minutes for the captions to load, but your video will now play with captions.
      • Note: You can view and edit the transcript following steps 13 – 17.
  13. Open your video in Stream using the mobile app (steps 1-7 of this tutorial).
  14. Select More Options Menu (three dots) to the right of Details.
  15. Select Transcript.
  16. Select Edit Transcript (Pencil Icon).
    • Note: Editing the transcript will also edit the captions. The page will need to be refreshed to see the updated captions.
  17. Select the Save button underneath the edited caption.
