The CTLD has launched a new AI Literacy training to help students understand what generative AI tools, such as MS Copilot and ChatGPT, can and cannot do, and how to use them responsibly in academic and professional settings. The training includes two optional module-based pathways, Self-Guided and Instructor-Learner Participation, that instructors can add to their courses. To learn more, visit Teaching AI Literacy: Preparing Students for Responsible Use.
As an instructor, you can choose whether to incorporate this training into your course and determine which learning pathway best fits your needs. This tutorial walks you through how to import either module into your Canvas course.
Note: If you would like to preview the training, you can import the desired path(s) into one of your existing sandbox shells in Canvas.

How the AI Literacy Module Appears in the Gradebook
All assignments within the AI Literacy Module will be automatically added to a new Assignment Group titled AI Literacy Module, and will also be added to the gradebook. If you have weighted grading turned on, the AI Literacy Module will automatically be set at 0% of the total grade, meaning the scores will not impact a student’s overall grade.
To learn more about how to adjust weighted grade settings, see our tutorial, Weighted Grading.
If you do not have weighted grading turned on, the assignments will appear in the gradebook as follows:
- Quizzes/Knowledge Checks will all be worth 5 points in the gradebook.
- If you would like make it so the quizzes do not count towards students grades, you can change the quiz to be a Practice Quiz instead. This will allow you and the students to still see the results, but it will not count towards their final grade.
- Click on the Quiz Name.
- Click Edit in the top right corner.
- Click the drop-down menu next to Quiz Type directly under the quiz instructions.
- Select Practice Quiz from the drop-down menu.
- Click Save at the bottom right of the screen.
- If you would like quizzes to count for Extra Credit, you can edit the questions to make them all worth zero points instead of one, and manually input scores for students who completed the quiz.
- To learn how to edit questions in quizzes, see our tutorial, Create and Edit Classic Quizzes.
- If you would like make it so the quizzes do not count towards students grades, you can change the quiz to be a Practice Quiz instead. This will allow you and the students to still see the results, but it will not count towards their final grade.
- Assignments and Discussions will all be automatically worth zero points in the gradebook, meaning any points you give them would be counted as Extra Credit.
- To learn how to change the amount of points an assignment or discussion is worth, check out our tutorials:
- If you do not want these assignments to appear in the Gradebook at all, you can edit them to not be graded.
- Assignments: Select Not Graded from the drop-down menu next to Display Grade as from the Assignment Settings Page.
- Discussions: Click the box next to Graded to unselect it from the Discussion Settings Page.
