Add Additional Time or Attempts for a Student in New Quizzes

Once you have set up your quiz in Canvas, including the allowed time for all students, you can easily change that time requirement for select students without editing the rest of the class. Canvas allows instructors to provide accommodations such as extra time and extra quiz attempts to their students using the Quiz Moderation feature.

Note: This feature is only available for published quizzes.

Directions

Add Time or Additional Attempts for One Student on Only One Quiz

1. Log in to your Canvas Account.
2. Select the Course you’d like to work in.
3. Click Modules on the course navigation menu to the left.
4. Scroll to the Module where the quiz you want to add time to is located.
5. Click on the Title of the quiz.
6. Click Build in the bottom right corner.
7. Click Moderate at the top of the page.
8. Locate the Name of the Student that needs additional time.
9. Click the Pencil Icon on the far right of their name. A sidebar will appear on the right.
10. To add time:
    • Click on the Drop-Down Menu under Time Adjustments.
    • Select Give Additional Time.
    • Enter the additional Hours and Minutes required.
11. To add attempts:
    • Enter the additional Number of Attempts required.
12. Click Apply in the bottom right corner. Your changes will be saved.

Add Time for One Student for ALL Quizzes in Course

1. Log in to your Canvas Account.
2. Select the Course you’d like to work in.
3. Click Modules on the course navigation menu to the left.
4. Scroll to the Module where the quiz you want to add time to is located.
5. Click on the Title of the quiz.
6. Click Build on the bottom right.
7. Click Moderate at the top of the page.
8. Locate and click the Name of the Student that needs additional time.
9. Click on the Drop-Down Menu under Time Adjustments.
10. Select Give Additional Time from the Time Adjustments drop-down menu.
11. Enter the additional Hours and Minutes needed.
    • Note: You may also remove time limits for this student or add a time limit multiplier, as needed.
12. Click Save. Your changes will automatically apply to all New Quizzes within the course.
