Turn a Classic Quiz into a Question Bank

Last updated on May 21, 2024

Question Banks are an excellent tool to use when creating Classic Quizzes. You can add questions to a bank, edit them if you like, and then add them to any Classic Quiz. You can use Question Banks to reuse questions and set up randomized pools of questions, for example.

You may want to add several questions from an existing quiz to a bank. The easiest way to do this is to export the quiz as a QTI file and import it back into the course, creating a Question Bank in the process. You’ll then have a bank with all of the questions from the quiz.

For an introduction on how to use the Question Bank in a Classic Quizzes, please view our Create and Use a Question Bank for Classic Quizzes tutorial.

Directions

Export One or Several Classic Quizzes

  1. Click Settings in the left-hand course navigation menu.
  2. Click Export Course Content in the right-hand menu.
  3. Select Quiz in the options for Content Type.
  4. Click the checkbox next to All Quizzes to deselect all of the quizzes.
  5. Click the checkbox next to the Quiz/Quizzes you would like to turn into question banks.
    • You can select any number of Classic Quizzes in this menu. Each of them will create separate question banks when we import them back into the course.
  6. Click Create Export at the bottom of the page.
  7. Wait for the Progress Bar to fill completely and the text underneath to read “Your content has been exported.”
    • This process usually takes less than a minute. During periods of heavy traffic on Canvas, it can take longer. You can leave and return to this page at any time without disrupting the progress. You will also receive an email when the export is complete.
  8. Refresh the Page.
  9. Click the QTI Export from [X] minutes ago link at the top of the page.
    • A .zip file containing the quiz files will now download to your computer.

Import the Quiz Files Back Into the Course

  1. Click Settings in the left-hand course navigation menu.
  2. Click Import Course Content in the right-hand menu.
  3. Select QTI .zip file in the drop-down menu for Content Type.
  4. Click Choose File.
  5. Locate the Export File that was downloaded to your computer in Step 9.
    • This file will most likely be the most recent file in your Downloads folder.
    • You should not select any of the other options. You do not want to import the quiz as a New Quiz. The “Overwrite assessment content with matching IDs” and “Select question bank” options are nonfunctional.
  6. Click Import at the bottom of the Import Content menu.

Delete the Duplicate Quiz

  1. Click Quizzes in the left-hand course navigation menu.
  2. Find the Quiz that you just imported.
    • There should be two versions. If students haven’t taken either version yet, they’ll both be unpublished and you can delete either. If one is published, you should delete the unpublished version.
  3. Click the More Options (3 Dots) button to the right of the quiz you would like to delete.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. Click OK in the pop-up menu that asks if you’re sure you want to delete that quiz.
