Embed a Video on a Page

Last updated on November 3, 2021

Videos can be a great way to get complex ideas or concepts across to your students. This tutorial describes how to embed a video, such as a YouTube video, on a Canvas page. Using pages provides a wonderful opportunity to include some much-needed context around your video in the form of an introductory paragraph (gain the students’ attention, guide them in what to think about or what to get out of the video), notes from you, or even a link to a reading that supplements the video.

Directions

  1. Go to MSU Denver’s Faculty and Staff Hub.
  2. Click Canvas in the Teaching & Learning section.
  3. Log in to your Canvas Account.
  4. Select the Course you’d like to work in.
  5. Click Modules on the course navigation menu to the left.
  6. Scroll to the Page you would like to edit.
  7. Click the Name of the Page.
  8. Click Edit.
  9. Click the Record/Upload Media button (it has a play button and a music note) above the Rich Content Editor.
    • Note: If you do not see this button, click the More Options Menu (three vertical dots).
  10. Click Upload/Record Media.
  11. Click the Embed Tab.
  12. Copy the Embed Code of your video.
    • Note: To find the embed code of a YouTube video:
      1. Open the YouTubeVideo.
      2. Click Share (below the video).
      3. Click Embed.
      4. Copy the Embed video Code that appears.
  13. Paste the Code into the Embed Code box in Canvas.
  14. Edit the Code, if desired.
    • Change the frame Width as desired. For example, if you use width = “98%”, your video will fill up most of the width of the Canvas page.
    • Change the frame Height as desired. For example, if you use height = “600”, your video will fill the monitor height.
    • Common dimensions you could use are width = “720”, height = “405”.
  15. Click Save.
