How do I delete the subtotal columns in my Gradebook?

Last updated on October 19, 2021

The subtotal columns in your Canvas gradebook are populated automatically by the different groups you have in your assignments folder. These subtotal columns cannot be hidden or deleted. You may turn off the subtotal columns in settings, though this will also disable the total column.

By default, Canvas has one main group called “Assignments” that encompasses assignments, quizzes, and discussions. You can also create custom assignment groups for weighted grades or organization that will automatically populate the gradebook. For example, if you want to separate your assignments into case studies, quizzes, and a final project, each of those assignment groups will have a separate subtotal in the gradebook.

Students will see these subtotals in their grades summary. The subtotal columns may be helpful to students, so they can identify specific areas for improvement within a course.
