Add Images to Questions in New Quizzes

Adding images to a quiz question can help visually illustrate the concept, activate student knowledge, and improve student engagement. This tutorial describes how to use the Rich Content Editor to add images to your quiz questions.

Add Image to New Quiz

These instructions are for New Quizzes that have already been created. If you need to create a New Quiz, please refer to the “Create a New Canvas Quiz” tutorial.

1. Log in to your Canvas Account.
2. Select the Course you’d like to work in.
3. Click Quizzes in the course navigation menu on the left.
4. Click the Name of the New Quiz.
   • Note: The icon for a New Quiz is filled in, while a Classic Quiz is an outline only.
5. Click Build in the bottom right corner.
6. Click on the Question you wish to add an image to.
7. Click the Question Stem text box to open the Rich Content Editor. A toolbar should appear at the top.
8. Click the Image icon (a picture of mountains and a sun).
9. Select from the Drop-Down Menu one of the following options:
   • Upload Image: the image is located on your computer.
   • Course Image: the image is already in your Canvas course files.
   • User Image: the image is already in a student’s Canvas files.
10. Locate and select the image you want to insert.
11. Enter Alt text in the textbox under Alt Text.
    • Note: For Course and User Images, click the image that was inserted, then click Image Options to add Alt Text. Click Done at the bottom right of the panel to save your Alt Text.
12. Click Submit for images uploaded from your computer. The image should load into the rich text editor.
13. Click and drag the blue squares at the corners of the image to resize the image.
14. Click Done at the bottom right of the question.
    1. Note: New Quizzes automatically save once you click Done. You do not need to click Save.
